Pumping Solutions for Paper & Pulp Mills

Pumping Solutions For Paper & pulp Industry

In paper and pulp processing, pumping is less about moving liquid and more about managing fluid complexities with precision. Thick fibrous slurries, abrasive solids, and high-viscosity mixtures demand pumps that can perform without disruption.

From the aggressive chemical recovery process to the precision required in kitchen coating, operational flow is often threatened by the clogging, accelerated wear, and unplanned downtime. Roto Pumps addresses these vulnerabilities through precision-engineered progressive cavity pump technology. Its low-shear operation and ability to handle varying consistencies make them a dependable choice across multiple stages of the paper and pulp industry.

We move beyond the "one-size-fits-all" approach, providing the technical resilience needed to transform high-maintenance bottlenecks into streamlined, predictable assets. In an era where every minute of uptime defines your competitive edge, we provide the quintessential engineering quint-essential for seamless, continuous manufacturing.

Phase 1: Pulping & Chemical Recovery (Black Liquor)

  • Process: Wood chips and straw are processed in a Digestor to separate lignin from cellulose. This produces Black Liquor, which is then sent through evaporators to recover chemicals as green and white liquor.
  • Challenge: Black liquor is highly viscous, corrosive, and contains dissolved organic solids that can easily crystallize or cause scaling in standard pumps.
  • Roto Pump Used: Progressive Cavity (PC) Pumps are used for dosing chemicals into the digestor and transferring the concentrated black liquor.
  • Benefits: Roto pumps handle high-viscosity and chemically aggressive fluids with steady, pulse-free flow, preventing turbulence that could interfere with the chemical recovery cycle.

Phase 2: Stock Preparation (Medium Consistency Paper Pulp)

  • Process: Pulp from the digestor or de-inking plant is refined and moved through bleaching and washing plants. This results in Medium Consistency Paper Pulp being fed into the machine chest.
  • Challenge: Medium consistency pulp (8%–15% solids) is thick and non-Newtonian; it does not flow like water and can easily "dampen" or clog systems.
  • Roto Pump Used: A High-Consistency Roto Pump (often with a wide-throat hopper) is used at the machine chest and refiner stages.
  • Benefits: The positive displacement action ensures the thick pulp is moved reliably without dewatering the fiber, maintaining a consistent supply to the paper machine.

Phase 3: Kitchen Coating & Starch Processing

  • Process: In the Coating Kitchen, ingredients like Starch, China Clay, and Latex are mixed in a Cooker and prepared for the paper coater.
  • Challenge: Starch processing requires handling shear-sensitive fluids. If the starch or coating mix is agitated too violently, its viscosity changes, leading to uneven application on the paper.
  • Roto Pump Used: Roto PC Pumps are used to transfer starch to the cooker and the final coating mix to the paper coater.
  • Benefits: The low-shear pumping action preserves the delicate chemical structure of the coating media, ensuring a smooth, high-quality finish on the Coated Paper.

Phase 4: Chemical Dosing & Additives

  • Process: Sizing chemicals, dyes, resins, and defoaming agents are injected into the pulp sizing and hold tanks to give the paper specific properties.
  • Challenge: These chemicals must be added in exact, minute quantities. Any fluctuation in flow leads to variations in paper color, strength, or water resistance.
  • Roto Pump Used: Roto Dosing Pumps.
  • Benefits: These pumps offer high metering accuracy, allowing for precise control of expensive additives and ensuring uniform paper quality across the entire production run.

Phase 5: Effluent Processing

  • Process: Waste liquids from the hold tanks and washing plants are collected for Effluent processing to meet environmental standards before discharge.
  • Challenge: Effluent often contains a mix of abrasive grit, discarded fibers, and chemical residues that are unpredictable and harsh on mechanical seals.
  • Roto Pump Used: Roto Effluent Treatment Pumps.
  • Benefits: The robust design handles varying solid sizes and abrasive particles effectively, ensuring the treatment plant operates continuously without frequent seal failures or clogging.
